Legal Counsel

We have a unique opportunity for a qualified Legal Counsel, to work in-house within Moneybarn’s Risk & Compliance function.  You will be a trusted advisor to the organisation; delivering first class legal affairs support on matters of key strategic, financial, regulatory and reputational importance to the business.

As the Legal Counsel you will also take responsibility as the Data Protection Officer, ensuring systems and controls are in place and our employees comply with the UK Data Protection Legislation.

You will be confident and commercially-minded with strong communication and interpersonal skills, have an engaging and influencing style and the ability to work with all levels of the business. including management and senior stakeholders.

What you’ll be expected to do in the role
  • Ensure the provision of excellent drafting, negotiating and management of customer and supplier contracts in a timely and effective way to deliver the best outcome for the organisation and its customers
  • To write accurate, informative guidance notes and legal alerts on issues which are likely to affect the business or certain areas of the business
  • Working effectively with external counsel where required and actively managing the needs of all external legal advice required by the organisation. Including managing the cost and performance of external lawyers
  • To setup and implement a legal framework across the business
  • To arrange and implement a legal due diligence report for the business on an annual basis
  • To be the sole point of initial contact for all legal queries within the business
  • To assist in the escalation of key risk issues to business owners and advising on relevant impact to the business
  • Formalise and maintain relationships with the executive team and other key internal & external stakeholders
  • To promote and facilitate collaboration with the other teams
  • To provide appropriate challenge and remain robust in the face of challenge to deliver the best possible outcomes
  • To ensure regular, collaborative, interaction with all stakeholders to the benefit of the organisation
  • To represent the organisation in attending trade body events (Finance & Leasing Association) as required
  • Be the focal point for all activity within the organisation relating to data protection
  • Support and co-ordinate senior management focus on and promote a culture of awareness of data security throughout the organisation
What we’re looking for from you

Must have

  • You will need a strong academic background
  • You will have a deep understanding of the latest regulations and legislation within the consumer credit sector. Additionally, you will need a thorough understanding of the regulations and legislation regarding data protection and the role of Data Protection Officer


  • Previous in-house motor finance experience
  • Gained financial regulatory experience in a large national or regional firm
